Police will have resources to confront threat - Goggins
Wednesday 6 May 2009

Security Minister Paul Goggins MP has praised the dedication and professionalism of the PSNI, particularly in confronting the threat posed by a small group of criminal fanatics.
He was speaking at the annual Superintendent’s Association conference in Antrim today where he told delegates that the united reaction by people across Northern Ireland to the brutal murders of Constable Stephen Carroll and Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar was clear evidence that Northern Ireland has moved on and there will be no going back to the past.
Paul Goggins said: “The criminals who carried out these brutal murders do pose a serious challenge but together we have the human resources, ability and determination to meet that challenge head on.
“The Government will play its part by following through on the commitment made by the Prime Minister that the police will have the resources they need.
“The additional £28 million being made available to the PSNI – including a commitment to purchase a second helicopter – is clear evidence of the Government’s support for the PSNI.”
The Minister also confirmed that the Government has considered the findings of a report into the review of the Transitional Allowance and agreed that officers should continue to be paid at the current rate to reflect the unique challenges officers currently faced. There will be a further review in 2011.
