Police Medical Appeals
Pensions and Injury on Duty Appeals
In accordance with the RUC Pension Regulations 1988, the PSNI and PSNI Reserve (Injury Benefit) Regulations 2006 and the Police Pension (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2007, if you are dissatisfied with the decision of a Selected Medical Practitioner(SMP) as set out in his report and certificate, you can give notice to the Northern Ireland Policing Board (NIPB) that you wish to appeal against it. The NIPB shall notify the Northern Ireland Office (NIO) (who act on behalf of the Secretary of State in these matters) of the appeal and the NIO shall appoint an Independent Medical Referee (IMR) to decide the appeal.
The NIO’s Policing Policy and Strategy Branch is responsible for administering the Secretary of State’s responsibilities in relation to medical appeals. Further information about the NIO Medical Appeal process can be obtained by using any of the links below:-
