THE ECRIT PROGRAMME
Introduction
The ECRIT Project was formally converted into the ECRIT Programme in June 2006. The fundamental aim of delivering a new criminal records disclosure system for Northern Ireland remains, however this change was required to take account of a number of fundamental changes in the technical and legislative landscape. These include: reforms to the way in which criminal records are dealt with in Northern Ireland; and work to create a new national vetting and barring scheme.
The current aim of the Programme is to deliver the Programme’s objectives by Summer 2007.
The Work & The Team
Specifically, the work of the team will include:
- establishing a legal framework for disclosing criminal history information relevant to making employment decisions, particularly in relation to those seeking work with children or vulnerable adults;
- creating a new body, supported by leading edge technical systems, to deliver the most comprehensive disclosure services available in the UK; and
- strengthening relationships with other disclosure organisations, including the Criminal Records Bureau and Disclosure Scotland as well as developing partnership arrangements with colleagues in the Republic of Ireland.
The team includes representatives from: the Northern Ireland Office; the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety; and the Department of Education. ECRIT is also working in partnership with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Causeway Programme.
