History
The Northern Ireland Office (NIO) was created in 1972 when the Northern Ireland Government was dissolved in the face of a worsening security situation.
The establishment of direct rule from London saw William Whitelaw MP appointed the first Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and 17 MP's have served in the post from 1972.
Owen Paterson MP is the current Secretary of State.
