Freedom of Information

Freedom of Information logo - link to the DCA website

The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act provides a general right of access to information held by public authorities in the UK subject to certain exemptions.

Authorities are also obliged to publish more information and make it easily accessible to the public. The NIO Publication Scheme lists the types of information that the NIO publishes or intends to publish. Virtually all of this information can be downloaded free of charge. Subjects and titles of items can be searched for in Publications and Statistics & Research.

If you believe that the information you require is not readily accessible (i.e. it cannot be found on the web or in a public library) then you may wish to make a written request for information to:

Freedom of Information
Northern Ireland Office
Annexe A
Dundonald House
Stormont Estate
Belfast

If the information you require relates to the work of another department or agency in Northern Ireland then you should write to it directly using the useful links.

How do I make a request for information?

How will my request be processed?

Are there any fees?

Can all information be released?

What about personal data?

What if I am dissatisfied with the response I receive?
