Secretary of State Peter Hain has today announced an open competition for appointment to the post of member of the Parades Commission.  

The Commission is currently made up of a Chairman and 5 members appointed by the Secretary of State.  This competition aims to fill the remaining position on the Commission.

Launching the competition, the Secretary of State said “Parades play a significant role in the cultural life of Northern Ireland, and the Parades Commission works to encourage mutual understanding and respect for cultural differences.  I believe that this is of utmost importance as we move forward in Northern Ireland.

“I would encourage anyone who wants to make a real difference and feels they could make a positive contribution to apply for this important position.”

1. Advertisements inviting applications for membership of the Parades Commission will appear in the press from today.  A position became available following the resignation of Donald MacKay in May 2006.
